Gurdeep Dhaliwal
I am a photo storyteller based in Punjab and interested in different aspects of life here.
Gurdeep Singh Dhaliwal (b 1993) started a little magazine that collected writings by school children of his village Sukhpura Maur in district Barnala in East Punjab, India. He found out his true calling was writing, so he ditched engineering and went to study English literature and creative writing in London. During his student years, he frequented art galleries and museums all across Europe. After finishing his studies, unlike most Punjabis of his generation, he came back to Punjab to tell tales of aspirations of his peers.
Although trained in the written word, he took the camera as his tool of choice to tell visual stories of college-going alienated youth.
What songs do they hear, what clothes do they wear, what types of moustaches do they sport, and whom do they post on the walls of their living rooms, full of boredom.
The human face is central to his image-making. Even when he is capturing empty spaces, human presence is evoked, through the cluttered clothes, bed sheets, utensils or hanging loose electric wires.
